Vixouze was originally a keep used for defense and observation of the Cère Valley, which was partially destroyed in the Middle Ages and then rebuilt. Under the reign of Saint Louis, Vixouze was, along with Pesteil and Foulholes - which have now disappeared - the only fortresses in the Vallée de la Cère. The château was subsequently remodeled in the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries. The Pagès de Vixouze family were responsible for the major alterations. Today, the Château is used for events (weddings, seminars, etc.).
